(The logic that determines if a streak should be stared or get an end date is a bit flawed..)

55 days left..

I was out on a road trip, and wasn't able to put my rides in until today. Will the next script run get all my rides?

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Yep, it won't be a problem. It is set up to look back 7 days from the most recent update, so any changes/additions in July rides will be picked up next time.

dobbs has been doing some midnight riding.. I guess it is a good way to create a rest day, if you should be so inclined :)

dobbs says,

Yeah, I've been going out at 1230 am, leaving my house and riding as far as I can in 30 minutes and then racing back. It's been good so far but it's tough on days when I work. The best is that it's nice temperature-wise, there's no traffic so it's pretty much go go go. My last one I managed to only hit one red light in an hour.

I also managed to finally install my front brake and throw on my new wheels (velocity rims laced to phil wood hubs with white industry cogs--woohoo!). Lotsa fun!

Has Matt indicated what he's gonna do in the event of a tie?

Chuckles says,

I still feel like hangashore is ahead myself :P I mean, it is unseemly for the scorekeeper to be in first place, even if it is a tie.

epersonae says,

y'all srsly blow my mind. I discovered that at about 2 weeks my brain (or body?) rebels and I just have to take a rest day...so when the top streakers started pulling up above 50, I figured that was my cue to let it go and just ride as normal.

I salute your determination. :)

Ya, honestly I've been feeling pretty wrecked.. Or at least I was for several days about a week ago :) I have to say, I totally thought I'd have a 600+ mile month, but a rest is feeling like a more constructive goal at the moment.

And then there is JeffL! I mean, I know it is a little different, but what an astounding amount of energy..

maudlin says,

I'm hanging on to my streak by my fingernails, but I'd like to keep it active until the end of August, at least. My typical daily mileage is nothing compared with the leaders, but I'm mixing in some slightly longer rides some days, so I don't feel too guilty.

I think JeffL is a cyborg. A cyborg with HTML skillz and good taste in desserts, but a cyborg nonetheless. :-)

sbatterman says,

Yeah, I didn't get into this thinking I would win (joined late by more than a month), and for me to win five people would have to meet tragedy which I most certainly would not want, but if I did win, I'd give the prize to JeffL. So he wouldn't get lost.

spokenword says,

well, personally, I've been a little ambivalent of this challenge. While I do find the determination of some to keep on riding everyday, I'm also a believer of having rest days as a vital component of any training/riding regimen.

I mean for those of us who are just casually riding around, a riding streak can be a fun motivator, but it can get counter-productive if someone is seriously training up for an event. Even doing recovery rides for a day has limited effectiveness in letting your body adjust to increasing levels of exercise tempo. It's a little counter-intuitive but your body can get stronger with four days of intense training, two days of recovery and one day of rest than it can with seven days of varying intensity.

All the same, though, kudos to everyone who's managed to break into double digits, and double that to the frontrunners.

I actually find I don't want rest days.On days when it's raining (like today) I get very antsy and start to pace around. I have to go to work in 15 minutes... I don't mind riding home in the rain at all (I kind of like it, actually) but riding to work is a bit bad as that means I have to bring a change of clothes, which is a pain in the ass.

Also, my work commute is far enough to and fro (21.6km) to qualify for the streak and by no means do I really push myself on those rides so, though I'm on the bike, I don't feel like it's a workout. It's very casual compared to the times when I'm specifically going for a workout.

I think part of is was that prior to getting this bike in April, I was pretty much a sloth. :) After almost a decade of not doing much phys activity (outside of the occasional ride or game of squash or ultimate), I'm enjoying the exercise for the first time since I was a kid. I absolutely loved racing my bmx when I was in my teens and this bike has pretty much been the best thing since.

If it's any consolation to anyone at all, I'm pushing ahead even though I'll have to drop out a week before the end of the competition on account of a honeymoon.

I'm liking both of the streak and distance challenges. With all the recent road construction in my end of town, I used to get really irritated about having to detour. Now I look at it as an opportunity to throw a few extra klicks onto my daily ride. And I don't mind so much having to go in to work for a bit on the weekends, since it means another couple of consecutive days' riding. All this with a crappy bike I keep promising myself to replace (but I'm too damn lazy to shop for a new one).

JeffL says,

I got behind on putting my days in, but I thought I got them in in time.

Am I out of the running?

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

JeffL, July 21st was the cutoff, and you had that date entered already, so it is no problem. I did kind of squint at the number of days you entered all at once myself, wondering if there'd be an issue.

7 days is actually quite a long time :P

JeffL says,

I think I'll finish my tour in nine or ten days, and probably leave from the Seattle area. Depending on my mode of transportation back home to Kentucky, I might miss a day of riding anyway.
