Grrr. I put one in on the wrong day - there were two on the 30th. Possibility of a fix?
Okay, I'll reprocess tonight.. I shouldn't ever leave more than 7 days between updates, so that these things can be spotted in time.
I guess if there is a tie, we'll go to the person that put in the most miles overall during the summer?
I dunno about total distance. Again, a lot of people would have adjusted their riding patterns if they knew that mileage (kilometrage?) was in play. But there's still two weeks left, and I haven't yet had my annual summer killer back spasm.
Rock-paper-scissors, anyone?
Yeah, I wasn't going for distance. I left out the majority of rides once I had a qualifying ride for the day. For instance, on work commute days I just entered that info and left all my other riding off even though it's my only means of transportation. Didn't seem to be a point to pull up gmap for every ride when I was only in the streak contest (I knew I couldn't compete for distance with JeffL).
That said, I guess it should be up to Matt as it's his awesome generosity that's making the prize available in the first place and I don't have any better suggestion besides, well, "Pick a number from 1 to 10." :)
Actually, I do have a suggestion... in the event of a tie, why not just extend the streak end-deadline and make it till someone misses a day? If I'm still in it and one of the tie-ers, I'd think that more fair than bringing distance or some other element into it.
Now coming to We Endure: Death Race 2008/ 2009 -- watch and marvel as a bunch of human icicles pedal their way through the depths of a Canadian winter (and whatever passes for winter in Missouri :-) 10 icy, aching km at a time.
I've never been so glad to be so behind in a competition before. :-)
(And my wee little streak is still alive. I just dallied in entering my second ride yesterday.)
You won't have to worry about me having a mild winter, keeping a streak alive. I'll be dropping out after Friday - she won't let me bring a bike on the honeymoon!
Not even if it's a tandem? :)
(congratulations!)
Yes, congrats notsnot!
(Now... who can I hook Chuckles and hangashore up with?)
The only tandem I can get my hands on is one that was *old* in 1986 when my buddies and I found it, and tore the hell out of. It's great - you can have one person pumpin' and steerin', and the guy out back can be spraypainting, or tossing fluorescent light tubes at high speed.
At any rate, yeah, she already thinks this streak thing is silly, so keepin' it up during the honeymoon would be mmmmmbad.
(once I get back, though, it's every day until the first snow - which in St. Louis may be February - at which point I'll switch back to swimming.
Riding in full-drench rain is kinda fun. The cagers all get the hell out of your way, and generally drive less like assholes!
It's the same way in blizzards :)
Unfortunately, when the blizzard is over, there is still snow where bicycles travel, but no snow where the cars travel. This means drivers think everything is okay, and it makes cycling...... interesting :P
Hey, y'all, thanks for the competition. I'm out. See ya in a week!
No, thank you notsnot!
And have a great honeymoon!
Cheers, notsnot - all the best to you and the future Mrs. N.
You've posted an awesome streak. Now go and enjoy your honeymoon!
I'm taking running shoes for after I've worn her out. ;)
Haha.
With only one day left, I think the tie is reality..
As far as I'm concerned, by whatever measure, hangashore is the obvious choice. Not only did he put in monster miles all summer, but he's been going from May 1st.
Yeah, Hangashore kicked ass in the miles, that's for sure. I'm sure he'll enjoy his prize.
I wanted to thank everyone who participated in the streak. It's been lots of fun. Congrats to everyone involved.
Yeah, it's been fun (some days, for certain values of the word "fun", mind you). Big cheers for those of you at the top of the list with serious mileage.
Now I get to see someone about my rotator cuff problems this week. I expect a scolding.
Thanks for keeping track for us, Chuckles. Besides the 100-day streaks, it was good to see a number of us racking up a month or two (or more).
To add a dissenting voice: it's still a tie, miles notwithstanding. Edmonton's flat wide streets and calm traffic don't compare to what y'all have to put up with in Toronto, or any number of other places (not to mention JeffL's epic trek). If said prize has already been obtained, I suggest a random draw (folded slips of paper from Matt's bike helmet?). Otherwise, divide (some portion of) what would've been spent among the co-leaders. Hell, I'd be well chuffed to end up with a MeFi blue tee out of the deal.
As always, final word to our kindly benefactor.
Props to all you bitches!
Hangashore, my, but you're gracious.
Anyone up for an informal contest for fall? Not necessarily eyes-on-the-prize, but go until say, the first proper snow for the canucks? Having to log my time and keep up with y'all was the *only* thing that got me out on the pavement at least 15% of the time this summer.
Congratulations to the winners(s)! I enjoyed participating; this is the first summer since I moved to Texas that I've kept riding. The streak thing also prompted me to bike while on vacation, which turned out to be a nice bonus on those trips, particularly New Orleans two weeks ago.
I'm in for a fall contest. Despite the final tally above, I haven't broken my streak yet (I mis-entered a date, but have fixed it now), and was planning on going at least until the official end of summer anyway.
I found the dynamic of who decided to participate pretty strange, so I was really glad to see maudlin and sbatterman stick with the challenge later on.
I'll recalculate streaks today to account for errors..
I'd love to figure something out for fall. A little twist on the rules would be nice, but I'm out of ideas :P
Toronto cycling is great through most of November, but I'll be going all year as usual :) I've even got studded tires this year!
I mentioned Canadian snow just for kicks, because, well, some years it doesn't snow in St. Louis until February, but I recall getting into an accident on account of snow on Nov 9 of my first year of driving ('91). I figure, another hundred-day streak will just be *fun*!
(I also wanna kick up some swimming and running miles again, once it cools off, and i'm not helping plan a wedding to boot.)
dobbs and hangashore, congrats to you both. What do you guys want to do for the prize? I could split the $650 I would have spent on the prize and give you guys equal amounts, or draw names for the ultimate winner, or I guess you guys could keep riding.
Lemme know what you think would be most fair.
Thanks, Matt.
I think it was a 3-way tie, actually. Chuckles, hangashore, and myself. I'm not sure what to suggest regarding the split. I've emailed hangashore and Chuckles to see if we can come up with something.
We obviously need some sort of playoff round in the spirit of the streak. Everyone must keep pedaling for 24 hours. Last one standing wins.
If that is a tie, we have to move on to the lightning round - everyone bikes into a storm, first one hit by lightning wins.
Seriously though, congrats to everyone. I had hoped for a longer streak myself, but just couldn't pull it together.
So dobbs, Chuckles and hangashore: have you all talked and sorted things out about the tie?
mikepop, be careful what you ask for because they just might do that :-)
I never heard back from the guys so I'll take that as a hint that my suggestion was poo. :)
Anyway, I'm fine with either of them getting it. (I think Chuckles should take the cash value and put it towards a bike that makes his riding a little less painful. Thinking of his bike made my own rides that much more pleasant!)
I'm gonna scoot now as keeping track of miles and such for my own benefit isn't really my kind of thing. Thanks again to everyone who competed and to Matt for throwing in the prize.
See you on the streets!
Okay, I think we've all talked, and I think the conclusion is we have a hung jury :)
As scorekeeper, I'm going to declare conflict of interest, and leave it to a coin flip between dobbs and hangashore, or a split prize.
(if somebody does end up with the thing, I sure would like to borrow it once or twice :P)
Administrator, please hope me!!1!!!
I've contacted both of my co-conspirators (dobbs via WeEndure messages, Chuckles via MeFi mail). We'll see what shakes out.
hangashore, no message received. try me at dobbs at wtfttfg dot com.
Chuckles, as I mentioned in email, I think it's silly to exclude yourself because you kept score. :P
Chuckles, you're still in, bitch. Christ - you did the time!
...and i guess I'll just rely on my own mental disease to keep me going this fall, vs a competition?
I'm going to be out of it until the Canadian Election is over, I think.. But, if everybody else is streaking, I might feel some peer pressure :)
I'd say start counting again on October 1st and see how things go, but I can set it for any date..
Well I know I said I was planning to ride until the official end of summer, but our forecast for tomorrow is "Northeast winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to around 55 mph. Chance of rain near 100 percent.", thanks to Ike. And I'm not sure I want to be THAT person on the news.
Winds of 40, not so..... oh right, miles :P
In the end, we didn't get hit very hard. I think notsnot probably got it a lot worse.
Yeah, it rained 5" here. My office had the creek rise, and there was water up to the outlets. It's kinda a man-cave here, with all the branches and leaves on the ground (one guy was here, and got everything off the floor, but one door blew open and let the flood flow instead of just seep in).
And I missed two days' riding, cuz every time I went outside to se what the weather was like, the wind (30 mph sustained) would kick up. Bah!
Hangashore, Chuckles and I swapped emails and came up with no real answer so agreed that if Matt just slices the pie in three it would be the swiftest solution. Let us know what you think, Matt.
I could slice pie three ways. mmm, pie.
If you guys got paypal, email me your paypal IDs and I can send the cashola right over.
