Well, looks like the script still works :) But sorry, I haven't had time to do anything but run it--Quake Live is too much fun!
For the record, if people are wondering what's going on.. Put the ride time temperature as tags when you post a ride. If the temperature changes a lot while your out, please feel free to put as many tags as you feel like to accurately represent the ride. If no temp is posted, 8C is assumed, which is about 46.5F.
Also, last year the top 5 participants all had more than 200 points, so we could all do to get moving!
I have another 8+ miles at 20 F (getting home from work last night) that i hadn't logged.
And let me tell you, I need credit for those miles! It was the middle of a winter storm and a really painful, tough slog through snow and slush and crazy cab drivers. I started out on the streets, decided the drivers were too crazy and switched to the lake front path. But the path wasn't plowed (as it had been in the AM) and it was just a mess. So, I switched back to the streets. I'm so sore!
I always lose out by having days off at the beginning of the month. It has also been warmer than normal which while nice for rides does nothing for my points! However this morning we had a much more seasonal 12F going on.
I had an unfortunate skidding crash on black ice on 12/31 and am nursing a fairly bad bruise on my right knee. I'm likely not to be back on my bike until mid next week. So don't worry mikepop, if you lose out, it won't be because of me :)
misskaz, I don't know how the paths are maintained in Chicago, but in Boston, bike paths in general are a minefield of ice and crud best avoided until the April thaw. Sympathies on the slog, though.
My sympathies, misskaz and spokenword. The cold isn't too bad up here, really, and we haven't had anything like the snow Chicago has had (yet). The only thing really bothering me is my bike's refusal to shift gears. I think I'm getting a beater for the season even after I get the damn Mongoose shifting again.
Oh yeah, and I have to move the Trek armchair into the house, too. Indoor riding won't give me icycle challenge points (well, unless I get really cheap about keeping the furnace on), but it will help me keep fit for spring. Intervals!
It is at least some comfort on those 2F mornings to remind myself of the point multiplier :)
I'm not sure us Texans should count in an "icycle challenge". I rode home from work tonight and it was 60+ degrees out. I cannot fathom how you could bike in 2F weather. More power to you, though.
(Don't mess with Texas).
And that's not counting wind chill (which we aren't allowed to count anyway).
I hit the road again tomorrow night, where it might get slightly below freezing. *sigh*
Well, so much for the challenge for me. I forgot I always have a bunch of business travel in January and thus have barely been on my bike this month. Riding all this week but that's it.
Okay, I rode in 40 degree weather this morning wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I was cold down to my bones for three hours afterwards. I need to buy some gloves and pants or something. Holy smokes.
You see? The global weather system took "Don't mess with Texas" as a direct challenge :-)
As I said in your post:
1) Get wool anything if you can get it. If you can't find anything in the stores, check thrift shops. Wool socks are the best socks in the world and can also act as mitts if necessary.
2) Layer stuff. You can unzip appropriate bits while on the bike, and if you need to strip to shorts when you hit higher temps, it won't kill you to stop for a minute.
3) If necessary, appropriately sized pantyhose will do as long underwear.
I generated the final results a few days ago, but forgot to post. Sorry about that..
Congrats to the winners. The frostbitten and shivering winners. You guys are hardcore.
And there's mikepop in the #1 spot, putting the "numb" into "nice numbers!"
I finally picked up my studded tires today, so when the snow shows up this week, I'll be ready for it.
Wow, it really feels like the month flew by. Congrats to all riders!
I kept thinking it felt like a mild month (relatively speaking), but didn't realize how much so until I peeked back at last year's numbers:
1) hydrophonic 1347.37
2) mikepop 1045.83
3) Chuckles 835.21
4) spokenword 771.28
5) sequential 177.35

Let's see what February brings he exclaimed, stealing a premature glance at his spring bike out of the corner of his eye.
Congrats, Mike!
