Adidas Run for the Parks - 4M
I left the house a bit late and had to actually run to make the start. First time that's happened. Nice little warm up I guess.
I'd like to say that it was an uneventful race, but my neck is aching thanks to one of my usual misfortunes. One of my usual stupid 'accidents' which have nothing to do with me, just a case of wrong place wrong time. Me, just minding my own business when POW, something goes wrong.
I was running along at the start and it was packed like normal. NYRR's puts orange witches hats (or are they called cones here?) along the course to keeps us runners on one side of the roadway. But at the start it's kind of impossible not to take up the whole roadway when there are 6,000 people trying to dodge and weave.
Anyway, I see one guy pick up an orange cone as he was running - it had been knocked down - and instead of standing it up, he hurled it over everone and onto the grass. I didn't think much of it.
That is until about 30 seconds later when one came flying out of nowhere and hit me in the head. The heavy part of it clocked me right in the neck just as I had started to run up Cat Hill. It diminished my enjoyment of running up Cat Hill considerably. Especially considering that I enjoy running up Cat Hill about as much as I enjoy getting needles stuck in my eyes.
I shook it off as best I could and kept running. But boy I gotta say, my neck is pretty sore now and I kind of wish I'd had the skills to pick my way through the throng, hunt the guy down and kick him in the ping pongs.
That guy...what a dick.

Makes you wonder what some people are thinking - or thinking with. I have to admit, I enjoyed your telling of the story even in spite of knowing you were traumatized - I guess that's from my sick, evil side. By the way, thanks for the well wishes on the Boston M. thingamajig back a week or so ago - I saw it the day before we ran. Nice to have the support - especially right then when I was pretty sure we would have been better suited in quarter inch neoprene and goggles instead of singlets and shorts. ldr
this is good.
except for the pain part, that part's bad.
but otherwise...good!
Thanks guys. I actually had a minor whinge to the race organizers via email. My favorite line from their reply:
"Your specific comment about the cones will be shared with our senior management team."
It just sounds weird. LIke "Your specific comment about the inconsistency of the size of the pebbles on the roadway will be taken to higher authorities".
And congrats on Boston, Lonn. Along with the neoprene and goggles, perhaps a sail with which to catch the wind? It's a hell of a visual. :)
