Day 3, a relatively short day, only 77 miles, but todays ride includes Quadbuster, a 1.3 mile climb that starts at mile 21. Leaving the campgrounds in King City, the approach to and after the 101 freeway overpass wins the worst road award, hands down, and for a while afterwards it was fairly rough as usual.
The first rest stop is at 18.9 miles at the Salinan Nation Cultural Center, just a couple miles before Quadbuster starts. This will be my 4th time on Quadbuster, having lead a training ride this spring, and it does seem easier, much more so than last year.
After the climb there is not much of a descent for all that work, but it is downhill till Rest Stop 2 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. From here to the next rest stop always has headwinds, and no attempt at a paceline was made, but it was just Jerome and I.
Lunch is in Bradley, and it was very pleasant in the mid 80s with the cloud cover keeping it much cooler than past years. up. To get to Bradley, we have no choice but to get on and off 101, and after leaving Bradley, we do this several more times, making for a bit of an unpleasant stretch. The shoulder is wide, but has large bumps about every 10 feet, so you either ride close to the white line at the road or suffer.
Rest Stop 4 is at Mission San Miguel at mile 65.8, only 12 miles to camp. The route to camp this year was the same as last, which keeps us off 101 (yay!) and along the east foothills for a very pleasant country road route into Paso Robles and the camp at the Midstate Fairgrounds.
