Day 3, a relatively short day, only 77 miles, but todays ride includes Quadbuster, a 1.3 mile climb that starts at mile 21. Last year I didn't think this was so bad, this year it seemed harder, but from my HR data, it doesn't appear I pushed myself very hard either.
Leaving the camgrounds in King City, the approach to and after the 101 freeway overpass wins the worst road award, hands down, and for a while afterwards it was fairly rough.
The first rest stop is at 18.9 miles at the salinan Nation Cultural Center, just a couple miles before Quadbuster starts, after the climb there is not much of a descent for all that work, but it is downhill till Rest Stop 2 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. For the next stretch, we rode in a paceline (excuse me, not a paceline, but single file at the same speed, since pacelines are forbidden in ALC.) But at one point I dropped off, and eventually got to Rest Stop 3 at mile 42.3. Lunch was in another 12 miles at Bradley, and it was starting to warm up. To get to Bradley, we have no choice but to get on and off 101, and after leaving Bradley, we do this several more times, making for a bit of an unpleasant stretch. The shoulder is wide, but has large bumps about every 10 feet, so you either ride close to the white line at the road or suffer.
Rest Stop 4 is at Mission San Miguel at mile 65.8, only 12 miles to camp. This year the route leaving this rest stop did not put us back on 101, but took us towards the east foothills for a very pleasant country road route into Paso Robles and the camp at the Midstate Fairgrounds.
