There were two incredibly steep sections on Los Gatos creek trail. I used to walk bike since it was too steep to ride. This time I managed to climb both sections on bike. I tried that since I left cleat covers for my Speedplays and I didn’t want to touch Speedplay cleats on sandy/muddy surface.
As soon as I finished Los Gatos creek trail, I encountered another challenge. There was a small path alongside highway17 which connects from dam to old santa cruz road. I took it because 1) I wanted to avoid detour on east side of reservoir. 2) I didn’t know the path was extremely muddy.
It was so muddy that the tires always slip left and right, bike frame collected mud and plant leaves. Finally I almost fell and I had to step on mud with Speedplay cleats. The exercise made my bike miserably dirty. I didn’t know whether I took advantage on time by taking this path instead of east side of the reservoir.
Finally this was the longest ride in couple of months lately. I felt pretty exhausted. One of the new years resolutions: I will try 50-60mile ride more frequently.

Came back to Hicks again. This concluded rides for 2008.
It looks like I earned only 2200miles in 2008, less than half of 5000miles I've done in 2007.

It was about a year ago when I tried Hicks north last time. I was very slow compare with last time but I am happy since I made it.
Along the climb on Hicks north side, I met a female cyclist resting at the roadside appeared to be enjoying the view from the road. Then after climbing some more, I met another female this time motorcyclist doing the same. View was good but not that exceptional. I was curious why Hicks attracted these solo female riders.
At the summit (or dead end) of the Umunhum, I met a cyclist who wore Morgan Stanley kit. Calm and nice guy. I was able to find his name and his team's articles on internet. They seem to be doing very well.
Toughest part of this ride was, interestingly the last few miles to my home. It was flat and actually slightly descent I believe but I felt that I ran out of energy. I should have brought and taken an energy bar at the summit of the Umunhum just like the racing guy was doing.
