ICE helps. Ice for 10 minutes, take it off for five, then another 10 minutes of ice.
Advil before the run (30 - 60 minutes) can help too, but don't become dependent on taking Advil before every run.
I know you probably have tons of advice for shin splints (and most of it doesn't seem to help) but I agree w/ strohland that ice is a good place to start. I think most of us give up on ice too quickly. While I believe that, in the past two years I've had shin splints occur twice where ice didn't seem to help -- maybe this was just because of the nature of the "shin splints" (as you also have probably figured out by now, they're not all the same). In both of these past two experiences, the only thing that seemed to cause them to go away was massage (ouch) and an ice/heat combination. Using all three modalities may have been the ticket OR this shotgun effect may have simply confused the issue -- was it the heat, or the ice or the massage or some combination of two??? I firmly believe that the massage, although it hurt like crazy, was the actual ticket since within two weeks they disappeared (massaged twice a week for two weeks.) Good luck.
I couldn't imagine having sore shins massaged... I had a podiatrist put pressure on my shins once when they were hurting... I still feel embarrassed about what I said when I felt that pain. :)
